Here’s why I take transgender issues personally…
Because I or someone I love might get cancer at some point, and a trans person who is capable of discovering the cure is otherwise occupied defending their right to exist.
I live in a world that needs leadership, and a smart, tireless trans person who should maybe be President is busy arguing that they deserve basic human respect.
I want to drive a fucking flying car someday, and the trans person who might invent it is stuck responding to Guardian editorials that treat them like they’re subhuman.
- It’s really weird to make an argument against compassion, which is really what I wanted to do here. Because treating all of this as a case for compassion really, I think, leads people with privilege to think too highly of themselves. Like, “Look how I awesome I am, I care about people who have fewer privileges than I do just because my heart is so big!” (That’s not a blanket declamation of “allies,” or whatever — but I think it’s an easy jump from “I’m compassionate” to “I’m a good person” to “I’m above reproach because of how good I am”.)
- Anyway, new bullet because that one got long and tangential — compassion is a fine thing, and a fine part of why everyone should care about everyone else. But it’s not the only reason, and it’s important that we remember that. Other people’s struggles are our struggles because we all exist in the same world and we benefit from being around people who are in a position to be great.
- Maybe it is dumb that I feel the need to say this, but I will say it anyway, because I’ve seen enough presumption-of-bad-faith condemnation of things I’ve written that I’d like to make it clear that I was aware of it: This is obviously not an argument that the only trans people who are worth speaking out for are the ones who are, like, the Einsteins and James Browns and Kurt Cobains, in terms of talent and intelligence. My point is that trans people are people, and as such have every bit as much to offer as anyone else, if they’re not too busy dealing with stupid fucking bigotry all the time.
- That’s it. For once, my “quick notes” are relatively quick.
