Apparently you can hire Jean Grae via Craigslist to spit sixteen on your track.
That’s pretty neat, honestly. She’s one of the best MC’s working today, and $800 is a fucking steal, all things considered (Nate Dogg charges $500,000 for the same service). If I had a little bit of extra money and were actually working on that new Spent Shells album I’ve been threatening for a year and a half, I’d jump at the chance. Shit, a guest verse by Jean Grae? That’d be something to tell the grandkids about.
I gotta respect her for this, too. It’s a goodly amount of up-front money to ask, sure, but how fucking cool and DIY is it to cut out all the middlemen and drop a verse on anybody’s track that’s serious enough about it to pay for it? Artists sell out in really mundane ways every day- this is the opposite. She’s taking control of her career, and providing an opportunity for something really new to anybody with a realistic amount of money ($800 isn’t a prohibitive figure or anything). I hope she gets on a thousand songs off of it, and they’re all great.
For proof that it’s a good investment, check out Jean stealing “Under the Hammer” from Diverse over an RJD2 beat-
